Assessing ADHD in adults can be complex because symptoms such as difficulties with attention, organisation, impulsivity and emotional regulation are common across many mental health conditions. This makes differential diagnosis and considering the whole person key considerations.
This webinar is designed for clinicians who assess for ADHD: psychologists, GPs, psychiatrists and other clinicians who see ADHD or co-occurring issues in their practice.
Dr Tom Mole and Dr Iona Walker present a practical and systematic approach to adult ADHD assessment from psychiatrists’ and clinical psychologists’ perspectives. The webinar focuses on how standardised questionnaires and psychometric measures can complement the clinical interview and strengthen diagnostic decision-making.
The session explores the role of screening measures, developmental history, functional impairment and differential diagnosis, including how clinicians can integrate information from multiple sources rather than relying on any single questionnaire or clinical impression.
The webinar includes a formal presentation followed by a facilitated discussion exploring common clinical dilemmas, practical approaches to assessment, and questions from the audience. The discussion will provide an opportunity to explore practical questions about adult ADHD assessment, psychometrics and differential diagnosis in greater depth.
By the end of this session, participants should be able to:
Use psychometric measures appropriately: Understand how standardised questionnaires can contribute to ADHD assessment and where they sit alongside clinical interview and professional judgement.
Distinguish screening from diagnosis: Recognise the strengths and limitations of ADHD screening instruments and avoid over-interpreting questionnaire scores.
Consider differential diagnosis: Explore how ADHD symptoms can overlap with autism, anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep difficulties, substance use and other neurodevelopmental and psychiatric presentations.
Integrate multiple sources of information: Consider how self-report measures, collateral information, developmental history and clinical observations can be brought together to inform diagnostic conclusions.
Navigate diagnostic uncertainty: Develop a framework for interpreting conflicting or ambiguous assessment findings and deciding when further assessment may be required.
This 90-minute webinar will include approximately 40 minutes of formal presentation, followed by a facilitated clinical discussion and audience Q&A.
Dr Tom Mole is a Consultant Psychiatrist and co-founder of Kin Clinic, with more than fifteen years of experience in medicine.
He trained in psychiatry across the UK and Australia, including completing a fellowship at the University of Cambridge. Tom currently provides ADHD assessment, diagnosis and medication management for children, young people adults.
Tom has a particular interest in psychometrics and the use of standardised assessment to complement clinical expertise. His approach integrates evidence-based psychiatric care with consideration of the broader lifestyle and wellbeing factors that contribute to long-term outcomes.
Outside of work, Tom enjoys surfing and sailing.
Dr Iona Walker is a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Co-CEO at Kin Clinic, with over 15 years’ experience in psychology and mental health care. She holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and has specialist training in neurodiversity, including ADHD and Autism assessment across the lifespan.
Her clinical interests include ADHD and Autism, trauma and PTSD, mood and anxiety disorders, relationship counselling, and neuro-affirming care. Iona takes a compassionate, evidence-based and person-centred approach, helping clients build insight, improve wellbeing and work towards meaningful goals.
Outside of clinical work, she enjoys yoga, surfing, nature and spending time with friends
