Dr Simon Baker researches and develops the psychological scales in NovoPsych’s assessment library, giving clinicians scientifically validated and clinically useful psychometric tools. Simon joined NovoPsych after 15 years in mental health research, spanning neuroimaging, digital mental health, prevention, implementation science, and service evaluation at Monash University, the Black Dog Institute, and Orygen.

Psychological assessments developed

Personality Inventory for DSM-5 – Adaptive (PID-5-A) — an adaptive administration of the PID-5-SF, developed from data on more than 15,000 respondents. It reduces the number of items administered by 27% and completion time by 18%, while holding false negative rates below 5% across all 25 personality facets.

MSS-Dynamic — an adaptive administration of the Maladaptive Schema Scale, developed from data on more than 7,800 respondents, achieving a 31% reduction in items and a 35% saving in completion time.

Research and evaluation experience

Simon completed his PhD at Monash University, examining the relationship between the development of brain connectivity and alcohol use during adolescence as part of the Orygen Adolescent Development Study. This work required the development of a novel computational approach for processing and analysing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain connectivity data. Prior to this, his Honours research examined semantic and associative priming in schizophrenia using behavioural and electroencephalographic (EEG) data.

At the Black Dog Institute, Simon worked on a pioneering research program using smartphone apps, online games, and social media data to help prevent and treat common mental health conditions. He then managed a partnership between the Black Dog Institute and Everymind focused on refining, implementing, and evaluating technology-enabled preventive mental health interventions in workplace, school, and healthcare settings. During this time, Simon also worked on the Smooth Sailing school-based mental health service, including an implementation trial across 24 schools involving more than 2,000 students, as well as the Future Proofing Study, evaluating whether cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) based digital interventions can prevent depression and anxiety at scale when delivered in schools.

At Orygen — Australia’s National Centre of Excellence in Youth Mental Health — Simon was responsible for research and evaluation strategy, data management, analysis, and reporting for Orygen Digital’s Moderated Online Social Therapy (MOST) service.
