Goals:
Session focused on Mary’s goal to reduce workplace anxiety and improve assertive communication with colleagues. Mary reported partial progress with anxiety management but continued avoidance of difficult conversations. Barrier identified as fear of negative evaluation limiting goal achievement.
Intervention:
Applied CBT cognitive restructuring to challenge catastrophic thoughts about workplace interactions. Practised assertive communication through role-play scenarios addressing recent conflict with colleague. Provided psychoeducation about anxiety cycle and relationship between avoidance and increased distress. Collaborative problem-solving used to develop graded approach to re-engaging with team.
Response:
Mary engaged actively and demonstrated good insight into avoidance patterns. She showed visible relief during role-play and reported feeling “more confident” about addressing conflict. Affect shifted from anxious to hopeful by session end. Mary expressed motivation to practice skills but acknowledged ongoing uncertainty.
Plan:
Mary agreed to practice assertive communication script and complete daily thought records. Next session will review workplace interaction outcomes and continue exposure work. No referrals or safety concerns at this time. Next appointment scheduled for 22 March 2024 at 2:00 PM.
